Do you tile under or up to the side of a bathroom vanity?

I was remodeling my spare bathroom and was very surprised to find out that when we removed the bathroom vanity, the former owners had actually tiled up to the edge of the vanity, rather than tiling underneath it.   Normally this wouldn’t be a big issue, but the bathroom vanity that I was installing was actually an inch shorter than the previous one.

This got me thinking…. what is the proper way to tile the floor?  Should you tile up to the vanity or actually tile underneath it?  For the small amount of space under the vanity, I would think that it would just be easier to tile underneath it, since I now have to go out and try to match the tile that is currently in place.
